Faith Hill at CMAs: Farce or Fierce?

Country music superstar Faith Hill was caught on camera apparently screaming, “WHAT?!” after it was announced, Monday night on the CMA Awards, that newcomer Carrie Underwood won the award for female vocalist of the year instead of herself. Hill denies that she was angry and says that it was all just a playful joke. Her voice could not be heard but the video clearly shows that right before the winner’s name was announced, she struck a winning “tada” pose, and then became shocked and enraged after she realized that it was not her name that was called. It seems that she was entirely expecting for her name to be called and not Underwood’s name.

It was indeed a shock that Underwood won the award because she has been in the country music business for less then a year. The other four women – Hill, Sara Evens, Martina McBride and Gretchen Wilson – have been in the music business for far more combined years then years Underwood has been alive! So far she has released just one CD and has only 3 singles on the radio. While she does have genuine talent and enormous popularity, she doesn’t deserve to be named the top female country music singer just yet!

On Monday, Underwood also won the Horizon Award for best new country music artist. She probably does deserve this award. However, to give her the female vocalist of the year award too, is like a pro sports player winning both Rookie of the Year and the MVP. It just doesn’t happen, and I think it is at least a little disrespectful towards the four highly accomplished women that were also nominated.

But, that doesn’t mean Faith Hill’s reaction should be condoned. The reaction was indeed being a sore looser. If her reaction was as bona fide as it seemed, then she should own up to it and admit that she over reacted and apologize. She shouldn’t make up a lame excuse like she was just joking.

Eric,
I see your point, and Faith Hills reaction was almost as bad as Kanye West's "storming" on the stage after he didn't win the Video of the Year award for MTV Europe Awards. I find it hard to believe that it was a "playful" joke for Faith Hill. Kanye and Faith are both sore losers in my book. Get over it people! I don't listen to Country music, but I did watch the season of American Idol with Carrie Underwood and she was amazing. I would listen to Carrie's music any day.
